n8n Implementation for Business
I install n8n on your server, build your first AI automations and stay around when something needs fixing. My own business runs on more than a dozen n8n workflows.
An n8n implementation means installing this automation tool on your own server and building the first workflows that connect your systems and AI models. I do it from $1,400 including the first process, and your data never leaves your infrastructure.
Why n8n
n8n is an automation tool similar to Make and Zapier: you chain building blocks such as "email arrived", "extract the data", "save to the system" into a flow that runs on its own. The difference is that n8n can run on your own server. You then pay nothing for the tool itself, the number of operations does not matter, and customer data does not end up in someone else's cloud.
For companies in the EU, or serving EU customers, that last point carries real weight. Self-hosting is the most direct way to keep personal data under GDPR on infrastructure you control, without adding another US processor to your records.
I used to work on make.com, but as the number of processes grew, so did the bill, and some of the data I preferred to keep on my own machine. Today my automations run on n8n on my own server, next to monitoring and backups.
What runs on my n8n
These are not demo examples. These workflows run my business and four AI apps every day:
- Supplier invoices from Gmail into my accounting system (Infakt), with no manual retyping.
- E-book sales: Stripe payment, email with the file, signup to the mailing list.
- Video ads: short videos generated and published to YouTube and Instagram, in Polish and English versions.
- Daily report: sales and the key numbers in my inbox every morning.
- Error alerts: when an app or n8n itself starts reporting problems, I get notified.
- Blog agent: a model writes a draft post and I approve it with one button in an email. I write more about workflows like this on the AI agents page.
I walked through a customer service automation step by step in the post customer service automation with n8n.
n8n vs Make
| n8n (self-hosted) | Make (make.com) | |
|---|---|---|
| Tool cost | the server, no per-operation fees | subscription that grows with operations |
| Where your data lives | with you | in the vendor's cloud |
| Getting started | needs installing | immediate |
| Custom code in a flow | yes, JavaScript and Python | limited |
| Best for | companies with many workflows or sensitive data | a few simple scenarios |
If you have three simple scenarios and no sensitive data, Make is usually enough and I will not push you to switch. With a dozen or more processes, or data that should not leave the company, n8n pays for itself quickly.
What to watch out for
Your own server is your own responsibility. Someone has to update n8n and keep an eye on backups. I set that up during the implementation, and if you would rather not deal with it, I can stay on for maintenance.
Automation without monitoring is a time bomb. A change in one system's API can stop a flow for weeks before anyone notices. Every workflow I build sends its errors by email.
AI does not have to be everywhere. I add a language model where content has to be understood: an email, an invoice in an unusual layout. Plain rules handle the rest, more cheaply and more reliably. I cover what is worth automating, and when, on the AI automation for business page.
Why companies move to n8n
Your data stays with you
n8n runs on your own server. Invoices, emails and customer data never pass through someone else's cloud, which is the simplest answer to GDPR questions.
Cost does not grow with usage
Make and Zapier charge for every operation or task. Self-hosted n8n costs whatever the server costs, whether a workflow runs a hundred times or a hundred thousand.
AI built into the flow
OpenAI, Claude and Gemini models plug in as an ordinary step: read the email, extract the data, draft a reply, pass it on.
Invoices from email to accounting
Invoice attachments go into your accounting system without retyping. Mine run from Gmail into my accounting software.
Sales that run themselves
Stripe payment, email with the product, newsletter signup: the whole chain after a single click from the customer.
Reports and alerts
A daily sales summary and a notification when one of your systems stops responding.
How an n8n implementation works
-
01
Talk through the process
We choose the first process to automate and decide where n8n will run.
-
02
Installation
n8n on your server or VPS: HTTPS, backups, updates, accounts for your team.
-
03
First workflow
I build the automation, test it on real data and set up error notifications.
-
04
Handover and support
I show you how the workflow works and how to change it. We add more processes once the first one has proven itself.
How much does an n8n implementation cost?

Frequently asked questions
The Community edition can be self-hosted with no licence fee if you use it to automate your own business. You then pay only for the server, and a small VPS handles a dozen or so workflows. What costs money is n8n Cloud (if you do not want your own server) and the Enterprise licence with features for larger teams, such as SSO login.
Make is quicker to start with and needs no server, so it works well for a few simple scenarios. n8n wins when the number of workflows grows (you do not pay per operation), when data must not leave your company, or when you need your own code in the middle of a flow. I moved my own automations from Make to n8n for exactly those reasons.
Installing n8n on your server together with a first working workflow starts at $1,400 with me. Migrating existing scenarios from Make or Zapier starts at $1,950, depending on how many there are. The server and any AI model usage are paid separately.
Yes. n8n has built-in nodes for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini and other providers, plus agent nodes that choose for themselves which tools to use for a task. I use them to classify messages, extract data from documents and draft content, always with a point where a person can approve the result.
I can stay on for updates, backups and fixes when the API of a connected system changes. Or you can take it over yourself: n8n workflows are easy to read, and every one I build reports its own errors, so nothing stops working silently.
