Many website owners treat their site as a one-time project – they commission its creation, and after launch, forget about regular maintenance. Meanwhile, website maintenance, especially for WordPress-based sites, is an absolute necessity if we want to avoid serious problems with security, Google visibility, and overall site functionality.
WordPress is the world's most popular content management system (CMS), but its strength also lies in the huge number of add-ons – from themes to plugins. Most WordPress installations contain anywhere from a dozen to several hundred plugins and extensions that must be regularly updated and monitored.
Outdated plugins can contain security vulnerabilities, malicious code, or enable site takeover by third parties. The same applies to WordPress themes – lack of updates can lead to errors, crashes, and even complete site takeover.
Remember that WordPress itself also requires updates, just like other popular CMSs such as Joomla or Grav. Without proper technical care, each of these platforms becomes a potential target for attacks.
Lack of regular WordPress maintenance can lead to malware infection, which is one of the most serious threats. Such infection can result in:
At Devlom, I dealt with such a case – one large news website was infected with a malicious script. The process of cleaning it and re-indexing in Google took... several years.
That's why you should never (seriously!) leave your WordPress site without care. If you don't have someone responsible for its technical condition – you're asking for serious trouble.
Install the free Wordfence plugin – this is basic security that every site owner should implement.
Regularly update plugins and your CMS (e.g. WordPress) – updates often at least partially eliminate security vulnerability issues
